Fire destroys residence at Belfry

Firefighters are still trying to determine the cause and point of origin of a fire that destroyed this two-story home on Varney Drive just off Church House Hollow at Belfry. BVFD Chief Nee Jackson said firefighters were dispatched at approximately 8:50 a.m. Thursday and that, by the time the first units arrived a few minutes later, the fire had already consumed the bottom floor of the structure. Jackson said the house is owned by Vince and Paula Cyrus, who were not home at the time of the fire. Due to rekindling, firefighters had to return to the property four times throughout the day and evening, Jackson said. The Turkey Creek and Upper Pond Creek fire departments provided mutual aid. There were no reported injuries.
