Belfry topples East Ridge, 80-59

The recent rains have ravaged the area with high water. Some county schools were no exception, as Monday night’s Belfry at East Ridge game was moved to Elkhorn City Elementary School, as East Ridge High School dealt with water issues.

Meaning, East Ridge basketball coach Randy McCoy, would return to his alma mater the (former) Elkhorn City High School for the first time in 19 years to coach a basketball game. It had to be an emotional experience for the coach, who led the Cougars through years of success with numerous district titles and a 15th regional crown before departing and taking the helm at then Pikeville College. Though the Warriors kept it close through three quarters of play, Belfry rained on McCoy’s return, defeating East Ridge 80-59.

Belfry jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a Isiah Roblee three-pointer with 7:35 to play in the first. He would be answered and the game be tied 3-3 20 seconds later when the Warrior’s Dalton Wellman hit a three-pointer of his own. East Ridge would control the lead for nearly the entire first quarter, only to have the Pirates come back and tie the game at 17-17 with 55 seconds to play in the opening frame on yet another Roblee three-pointer. The Pirates would lead after one period, 20-17.

Cameron Hess would open the scoring of the second period for the Warriors. His shot off the glass with 7:41 to play before the break pulled East Ridge within one, but Belfry’s Devin Varney answered right back with a shot in the lane to make it 22-19 with 7:24 to play. Like the first, it would be back-and-forth the rest of the way in the second period, with Belfry taking a 34-33 lead to the locker room at the break.

The third quarter was more of the same. The game would be tied twice in the third, once at 39-39, and again at 41-41, before the Pirates finally took the lead for good. The end of the third would see Belfry’s Roblee score eight points in the final 1:32 including a three-pointer at the buzzer to make it a 54-46 game.

The fourth and final period, Belfry would start to pull away. They outscored the Warriors 26-13 in the final frame to go on to an 80-59 road win in a rare game at Elkhorn City Elementary School.

Belfry’s Roblee led all scorer’s with 28 points. He made seven three-pointer’s and was also 3-4 from the charity stripe on the evening. Varney added 18 points in the win. He was a perfect two for two from the free-throw line. Koleston Blankenship also added 13 points and was a perfect four for four from the stripe as well.

East Ridge was led in scoring by Dalton Wellman with 19 points, and was one for two from the free-throw line. Hess chipped in 15 points and Jacob Chaffins added 11 points respectively.

Belfry returns to action Thursday night as they travel to Floyd Central for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. East Ridge returns to action Tuesday night as they host the Phelps Hornets for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
