Bryant takes over as Jenkins volleyball coach

Jenkins volleyball coach Wesley Bryant

Some people are just born to coach. Wesley Bryant is one of those people. Bryant not only coaches the Jenkins girls’ basketball team, he has now taken the role of head coach for volleyball coach as well.

“It’s a great job because I have a good relationship with a lot of the kids,” Bryant said. “It’s going to be fun to meet new kids and develop new relationships with those kids. That’s what coaching is about developing relationships and pushing kids and preparing them for adult life in the adult world. These kids have already had one practice and it was a lot better than I expected. I didn’t think I’d enjoy this as much as I did and I really liked it a lot.”

Last season Jenkins finished with a 6-14 record.

Since Bryant knows most of the girls through basketball, his familiarity will help the volleyball team.

“It’s good because a lot of the kids know me,” Bryant said. “They know my expectations. They know what they can and can’t get by with. With those kids knowing me, some girls are going to come out that play basketball who would never play volleyball. But on the contrast, you might lose some kids. It’s a double edged sword with that.”

Bryant had his first practice with the team earlier this week.

“Yesterday, they said it was the best day of their summer because they just love playing volleyball that much,” Bryant said. “When we open the season on August 20th, it’s going to be a good day for them. I can’t wait to be a part of it. I just hope we have a good showing and we can make the school proud.”

Jenkins opens the season August 20th at home against 59th District rival East Ridge.
