Kyle Bartley

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 7, 1 p.m. at the Fairview Free Will Baptist Church for Kyle Alan Bartley, 27, of Denver, who died Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.

Burial was in the Ratliff Family Cemetery at Denver.

Steven Manis Blair, age 45, of Paintsville, passed away Monday, September 3, 2018 at Paul B. Hall Medical Center in Paintsville.

Michael Castle

1960-2018

Michael Dean “Mike” Castle, age 57, of Thealka, passed Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at his home.

Mike was born December 11, 1960 in Johnson County, son of the late Henry and Alfair Smith Castle. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Eugene Castle and Gary Lee Castle.

He is survived by his wife, Angie Hicks Castle; two sons, Mitchell Henry Castle and wife Kaydee of Louisa, and Zackery Michael Castle and wife LeeAnn of Flat Gap; one brother, James Henry Castle and wife Mary Beth of Stambaugh; one sister, Patricia “Trish” Fannin and husband Roger of Thealka; and three grandchildren, Emma, Ella and Parker Castle.

Mike was a long-time employee of Paul B. Hall Medical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2018 in the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel with Larry Smith officiating.  Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery, Staffordsville. Friends may visit the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Thursday, September 6, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 7, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 8, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m.

Farrell Mahan

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 5, 1 p.m. at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home in Paintsville, for Farrell Mahan, 69, of Paintsville, who died Monday, Sept. 3 at Pikeville Medical Center.

Burial was in the Dixon Cemetery at Staffordsville.

Regina McKenzie

1925-2018

Regina Hope Young McKenzie, 92, of Urbana, Ohio, formerly of Springfield, Ohio, went to meet her Savior on Sunday, September 3, 2018 at Springfield Regional Medical Center.  

Hope was born on December 8, 1925, in Van Lear to Thomas M. and Terie (Daniel) Young. She was the last of their 12 children to survive. She married Manis S. McKenzie on June 9, 1950 in Johnson County, Kentucky.  Manis and Hope migrated to Springfield in 1953 where they made their home and raised their family.  She was preceded in death by her husband in 2000 and her precious little girl, Janet in 1963. 

Hope is survived by her sons, Manis S. “Sam” (Barbara) McKenzie of Hilliard, Ohio, Gary (Pam) McKenzie of Springfield and Terry (Melanie) McKenzie with whom she made her home in Urbana; her grandchildren, Samantha McKenzie and Jed (Maggie) McKenzie of Hilliard, Brad (Melissa) McKenzie of Galloway, Ohio, Gary (Amber) McKenzie of North Lewisburg, Jennifer (Ricky) Stallard of Springfield, and Laura McKenzie of Urbana; eleven great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Whether she was Mom, Grandma, Mamaw, Great Grandma, or Aunt Hope, she was dearly loved and cherished. 

Hope’s funeral service was held at 12 p.m. Friday in the Littleton & Rue Funeral Home with Brian Borton officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Burial was in the Highland Memorial Park Cemetery at Staffordsville.

Bureda Nutt

1929-2018

Bureda Nutt, 88, formerly of Gravel Washer Road, Beaver, Ohio, died 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Minford Retirement Center.

Bureda was born December 2, 1929 in Oil Springs, the daughter of the late Pierce Trimble and Lillia (Caudill) Trimble.  On March 29, 1965, she was united in marriage to Howard Avery Nutt who preceded her in death November 4, 2006.

Bureda dearly loved her two sons, Jay (Denise) Nutt and Jerry (Sam) Nutt, her beloved grandsons, Jason Nutt and Jake (Stephanie) Nutt, and one granddaughter, Monica Ponder. She also had two great-granddaughters, Avery Nutt and Julia Ponder.

She had three sisters-in-law, Eleanor Smith, Eloise Turner, and Loraine Dawson along with many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her brother Billy “Jack” Trimble, who she spoke of often.

After graduating high school in Oil Springs, she attended Mayo Beauty School and became a beautician in Paintsville, where she worked for two years.

After she began working in a beauty shop in Louisa, she met Howard Nutt and they were married in 1965. Together they traveled to many states with his work until her father-in-law passed away.

They moved back to the farm in Beaver to take care of both her mother-in-law and her own mother until their passing. At the farm, they raised cattle and crops until they retired.

Bureda and Howard had 40 happy years together until his passing in 2006.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the Boyer Funeral Home in Waverly, Ohio, with Rev. Ronnie Hines officiating.  Burial will follow in Beaver Union Cemetery.

Family will receive friends at the Boyer Funeral Home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.

Lacy Puckett

1924-2018

Lacy Eugene Puckett, age 93, of Pikeville, Kentucky passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018 at the Pikeville Medical Center.

He was a Life Insurance Agent and served as manager for Commonwealth Life Insurance. He served on the Board of Directors of First National Bank and also Pikeville Medical Center. He was a member and Elder of the New Beginnings Fellowship Church of Pikeville. He served in the 41st Infantry Division of the United States Army where received three Bronze Service Stars, the Silver Arrowhead and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Lacy was born in Paintsville, Kentucky on December 13, 1924 the son of the late Lacy Eugene and Sola Boyd Puckett.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Belle Lyons Puckett, two sons, Gary E. Puckett (Debbie) of Pikeville and Michael Puckett (Dorsie) of Richmond, Ky.; and one daughter, Dianna Jean Harmon of Winchester, Ky.

He is also survived by sister, Emogene Burton Chandler of Paintsville; and seven grandchildren, Melissa Adkins, Amy Harmon, Solina Cole, Jeremy Puckett, Tyler Puckett, Jordan Puckett and Bryce Puckett and twelve great-grandchildren; also a host of great-nieces and great-nephews, including Dawn Stewart and Madison Stewart. And a special appreciation to Lacy’s caregivers Teresa Hopkins, Rella Jarrell and Shana Adkins.

Patsy Swisher

1949-2018 

Patsy A. Swisher, of Ashland, Ohio, passed away Saturday, September 1, 2018 at Kingston of Ashland, Ohio, at the age of 69.  She was born in Paintsville, the daughter of the late William Cochran and Ruth (Lemaster) Blanton. Patsy was a 1967 graduate of Oil Springs High School.  She had been a resident of Ashland the past 38 years where she was employed with Bill Harris Auto Center as a bookkeeper and receptionist. Patsy enjoyed making crafts, scrapbooking, gardening, antiquing, and spending time with her family, which included her “Sensational Six” grandchildren who affectionately referred to her as “TeTe.”

On June 21, 1969, Patsy married Jeff Swisher who survives. Throughout their marriage of 49 years, Patsy and Jeff were rarely apart in their free time, often visiting with family and friends. Also surviving are her son, Bret (Amber) Swisher; daughter, Jaime (Jeff) Honaker all of Ashland; her step-brother, David “Keith” (Sheri) Blanton; step-sister, Sherry Tierney; her grandchildren, Emma Swisher, Jenna Honaker, Jacob Swisher, Jocelyn Honaker, Madden Rosser, and Jordyn Honaker; her siblings, Ginger Williams, John (Karen) Cochran, Cathy (Bob) Cottle, Debbie (Ray) Keeton and Jeff (Nola) Cochran;  along with her 12 nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Patsy was preceded in death by her daughter, Suzanne Swisher.

Funeral services were be held at Heyl Funeral Home in Ashland on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 10 a.m. with Dr. John Jorden officiating.  Burial followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Shiloh.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 3, 1 p.m. at the House of Refuge in Paintsville, for David “Dave” VanHoose, 58, of Denver, who died Friday, Aug. 31 at his residence.

Brenda Williams

1947-2018

Brenda Sue Williams, age 71, of Oil Springs, passed away Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at U. K. Hospital. 

Brenda was born on September 4, 1947 in Johnson County to the late Lowell and Betty Blair Stambaugh.  She is survived by her husband, Frankie Williams; two daughters, Kim Williams and Sandy (Brad) Ward, all of Oil Springs; one brother, Lowell Eugene Stambaugh of River; three sisters, Oneida Blair of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Robin Fairchild of Paintsville, and Becky Wright of Flat Gap; and two grandchildren, Quade Ward and fiancée Chelsey Smith, and Bailey Ward.

 Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Sunday, September 9, 2018 in the Low Gap United Baptist Church, Oil Springs, with burial to follow in the Williams Family Cemetery, Oil Springs.
