Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, April 22, 2019, at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at the Rowe Cemetery, Belcher. Arrangements were under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Inc., of Elkhorn City.

Edith Brewer

Edith Bell Brewer, 62, of Pikeville, died Sunday, April 21, 2019, at Parkview Nursing Home.

She was born in Pike County, March 16, 1957, the daughter of the late Edward and Martha Howell Young.

She was a homemaker and of the Christian faith.

She is survived by her fiance’, Eppie Thacker; one son, Danny Brewer (Michelle); one step-son, Gordon Dale Carroll; two brothers, James Young (Della) and Benny Young; two grandchildren, Cory Brewer and Brady Brewer; one great-grandchild, Paxton Brewer; five step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel, with Keith Collins, James Justice, A.B. Thacker, Garfield Thacker and Teddy Honaker officiating. Burial will follow at the Howell Family Cemetery, Coon Branch.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 23, at the funeral home, with special services beginning at 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Larry Cantrell

Larry Earl Cantrell, 73, of Nicholasville, formerly of Pike County, died Friday, April 19, 2019, at his residence. 

He was born at Sycamore, Aug. 11, 1945, the son of the late Tolbert and Lila Baker Cantrell.  

He was a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church and a substation supervisor for AEP.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Martin Ray, Everett, Roy, Lewis and Elster Cantrell; and four sisters, Alka Coleman , Anna Lee Sanders, Rita Ruth Cantrell and Christine Phipps. 

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Hackney Cantrell; one son, John Michael Cantrell, of Nicholasville; one daughter, Toni Cantrell Shifflett, of Nicholasville; one brother, James”Jim” Cantrell, of Ashcamp; three grandchildren, Lauren Shifflett, Lindsey Shifflett and Jonathon Dalton Cantrell. 

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 22, 2019, at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, with Edgar Sanders officiating. Burial followed at the Cantrell Family Cemetery, Sycamore. Arrangements were under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Inc., of Elkhorn City.

Lizzie Compton

Lizzie Marie Compton, 89, of Left Fork of Island Creek, died Saturday, April 20, 2019, at Pikeville Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born in Pike County, April 29, 1929, the daughter of the late Rush and Mae Keathley Brewer.

She was formerly employed by Shurtleff’s Laundry, Pikeville Hospital and Mercury Manufacturing. She was a licensed cosmetologist and a member of the Island Creek Holiness Church in Jesus Name.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert Michael Compton; and several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Compton; one daughter, Audry Vogel (Bill); three sisters, Eunice Ann Forsyth, Fonnie Smith and Bonnie Freeh; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel, with Chester Varney officiating. Burial will follow at the Peggy Hill Cemetery, Island Creek. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Laura Janene “Punchie” McCoy, 86, of Zebulon Highway, died Monday, April 22, 2019, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born in Virginia, Dec. 16, 1932, the daughter of the late Hollie and Cleo Sowards Compton.

She was a bookkeeper for Pikeville National Bank and a member of the Eastern Star.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Ronald McCoy.

She is survived by one son, Paul Ronald McCoy II (Becky); two daughters, Bridgett McCoy Nicholson (John) and Holly McCoy Johnson (Jerry); three grandchildren, Jessica McCoy Sargent, Katie Wiard and Samantha McCoy Gardner; one great-grandchild, Harrison Blake Sargent; one sister, Anita Devine “Skeeter”; and her beloved dog, Molly.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2019, at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at the Annie E. Young Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

“Lana” Wright

Leilani Kay “Lana” Skeens Wright, 71, of Lexington, S.Car., succumbed to pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at 12:21 p.m. at her residence, surrounded by loving family.

She was born at Harman, Va., on Nov. 21, 1947, and graduated from Grundy High School, where she met her husband, Nolan Reed Wright. 

She lived her life in service to God, family and community. Her favorite Bible verse was Psalms 23,” The Lord’s Prayer”. Her faith carried her through the ravages of cancer for five years and allowed her to give to others through ministry and participation in immuno-therapy clinical trials in hopes of advancing treatments for others. She chose to live each day fully and to express her love to family and friends often. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nolan Reed Wright; her parents, Wilson “Junior” and Gladys Carpenter Skeens; her brother, David Skeens; and her sisters, Carole Kinder and Nita Bailes.

She is survived by her children Lisa Huppertz (John) and Reed Wright (Michelle); her grandchildren, Danielle Huppertz (Andrew Bush), Taylor Lineberry, Kayla Huppertz, Samantha Scoggins (Brandon) and Garret Wright; eight great-grandchildren; her brother, Denver Skeens (Becky); and her beloved cat, Buttons. 

She has chosen to be cremated, so a Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Barr-Price Funeral Home of Lexington, South Carolina.
