Mary Lou Bowling, 84, of Elkhorn City, died Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at her residence.

She was born in Pike County, March, 13, 1935, the daughter of the late Rufus Dew and Mellie Elizabeth Anderson.

She was a retired bank teller for BB&T and a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Doug Bowling; and two brothers, James Garnet Anderson and Gordon Anderson.

She is survived by one son, Steve Bowling (Gena); one daughter, Diana Rose Lawill (Elgin); three grandchildren, Rachel Hall, Zachery Bowling and Joshua Bowling; and three great-grandchildren, Chase Hall, Ally Hall and Lexi Hall.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Jimmy Dale Sanders, James Tackett and others officiating. Burial will follow at the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Friday, June 14, at the funeral home with special services beginning at 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Earl Damron

Earl Thurman Damron, 67, of Ashcamp, died Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born in Pike County, Feb. 8, 1952, the son of the late Harve George and Martha Jane Mullins Damron.

He was a coal miner, a member of the American Legion and of the Christian faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, George, Albert, Fletcher, John Paul and James Damron; and three sisters, Janice Sykes, Della Prince and Peggy Tomlin.

He is survived by one brother, Arvel Damron; two sisters, Dorothy Ramey and Mary Velazquez; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the Hylton Freewill Baptist Church with Van Swindall and Edgar Sanders officiating. Burial will follow at the Potter Cemetery, Elkhorn Creek. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Maxie June Flanary, 94, of Long Fork of Virgie, died Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born on Feb. 18, 1925, the daughter of the late Thomas and Bertha Osborne Newsom.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Harold Dean Flanary; and five brothers, Darvin, Hassell, Hurshell, Clyde and Clarence “Coon” Newsom.

She is survived by one son, Gary Flanary, of South Rockwood, Mich.; and two sisters, Neva Morgan, of Michigan, and Oma Mullins, of Ohio.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Billy Akers and others officiating. Burial will follow at the Rob Newsome Cemetery, Little Robinson Creek.

Visitation will continue on Friday, June 14, at the funeral home with services beginning at 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

Alice Griffith

Alice Marie Griffith, 86, of Little Card Road, Mouthcard, died Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born at Freeburn, Sept. 19, 1932, the daughter of the late Clell Hunt Sr. and Rosie Robinette Hunt.

She was a retired dietary director at Grundy Hospital, Grundy, Virginia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Edwin M. Griffith; three sisters, Mildred Hunt, Stella Abshire and Geraldine Colley; two brothers, Eugene Hunt (Clifford) and John Will Hunt; one grandson, Michael Kevin Fields; one son-in-law, Eugene Fields; and one great-granddaughter, Madison Bailee Frederick.

She is survived by two sons, Eddie D. Griffith (Kathy) and William K. “Tattoo” Griffith (Becky); five daughters, Rosenell Fields (Eugene), Patty Freeman (Billy), Clara Taylor (Worley), Patricia Griffith (Tish) and Angela Burchett (Stephen); 10 grandchildren, Keith Fields (Vivian), Michelle Frederick (Chris), Alicion Freeman Slone, Tabitha Stoll (Adam), Jessica Rader (Jeremy), Bill Freeman (Geri), Natasha Nicole Pierson (Kyle), Korey Fields, Mason Griffith and Maria Griffith; eight great-grandchildren, Jacob Fields (Becky), Kristina Fields, Michael Fields, Christin Frederick, Greyson Rader, Caroline Slone, Matthew Stoll and Kithius Isley; two great-great-grandchildren, Adalyn Faith Fields and Kinsley Fields; one brother, Clell Hunt Jr. (Barbara); three sisters, Ocie Owens (Jimmy), Vannie Miltimore (Eugene) and Piney Mullins (Lenville); and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbors.

She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Special thanks to Heather Sullivan for her loving care of our precious mother. We would like to thank everyone for their prayers and visitations. We would also like to thank Dr. Samuel King and his staff, all of the doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, physical, occupational and respiratory therapists, laboratory personnel, cafeteria personnel and other members of the hospital staff at PMC who showed compassion to our mother and family and rendered excellent care.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Sunday, June 2, 2019, at the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Lloyd Holland officiating. Burial followed at the Big Rock Memorial Garden, Big Rock, Virginia. Arrangements were under the direction of the Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.
