Pike County Jailer Brian Morris said Monday that a corrections officer at the Pike County Detention Center has been suspended following an incident at the jail which is under investigation by the Pikeville Police Department.

According to a statement issued Monday, Morris said the incident, which was not detailed in the statement, occurred last week between a corrections officer at the jail and an inmate, neither of whom had been publicly named as of presstime Monday.

The incident, Morris said, prompted him to immediately open an investigation with the Pikeville Police Department and suspend the officer in question pending the outcome of the investigation.

Once the investigation is complete, Morris said in the statement, any action will be taken immediately.

“At the Pike County Detention Center, it is our goal to treat every inmate with respect and make sure their safety is of the utmost importance,” Morris said in the statement. “Our guards are trained to handle every situation and have resources to ensure that issues are not escalated.”

Morris said in the statement that he anticipates the investigation will be performed swiftly and the findings will be reported at that time.

“Any further action will be taken as necessary by me to continue to ensure the safety and well-being of every inmate,” he said.

The incident remains under investigation by the Pikeville Police Department.
