The  45th Hellier High School Alumni Reunion/ Banquet held Saturday evening, May 25, 2019, at the New Marrowbone Fire Department Community Center, was once again a happy homecoming event. Moreover, what a reunion it was as  Hellcats strolled through the door, and enjoyed the ambiance of days past and spirits bright. Hellcat class photos lined the walls in memory of days gone by, Hellier High School colors of orange and black splashed here and there, and everywhere as a reminder of our dear Alma Mata, and classmates  greeted, connected, and reminisced their favorite memory of their care-free Hellcat days.  This 45th Hellcat Reunion/Banquet proved  to be another successful event as The Hellier High School Alumni Committee presented a program that included, entertainment, a catered dinner, and recognition of honored Hellcats.

The evening festivities were kicked off by a rousing rendition  of the “Soggy Bottom Boys,” singing “ A Man of Constant Sorrow.” The crowd clapped and sang along with enthusiasm as Christopher Epling, Justin Hamilton and Donnie Jack Phipps danced, pranced and sung while decked out in bib overalls, beards, and hats that portrayed them as the famous “ Soggy Bottom Boys”. The Hellier Alumni thanked these gentlemen for their willingness to participate and entertain the gathered crowd at our reunion.

Our memorial table was adorned with pictures, cards, and candles made especially for attendees who have lost a family member or a friend who attended Hellier High School. A respectful time and devotion allowed all who wanted to light a candle, write a name, or place a picture of a loved one at the memorial l table set to honor and remember past Hellcats. These candles burn for the remainder of the program.

Each year the Hellier High School Alumni elects and inducts honored classmates into the Hellcat Hall of Fame. These awards are granted to outstanding Hellcats who have continued to support communities in which they live, those who have proven to be honorable classmates whose attributes are worthy of recognition, and Hellcats with a unique character which depicts outstanding accomplishments while attending Hellier High School and throughout their lives. Congratulations  Hellcat Hall of Fame nominees for your exceptional service. This year’s inductees include Doug Branham, Janie Baldridge, Cantrell, Pauline Bartley, Childers and Jimmy Lee Stewart.

The Hellier Alumni Association recognizes an outstanding local high school scholar and grants a $500 scholarship to the honored senior nominee. Specifications for this award include, GPA, ACT score and the participant must be a descendant of a  Hellier High School graduate. This year’s scholarship winner was Emily Morgan, the daughter of Jamie and Melissa Morgan, a senior at East Ridge High School and a citizen of Marrowbone Creek.

Congratulations Emily, on your award and plans, to attend the University of Pikeville.

Our  Hellcat Reunion/ Banquet would not be complete without a great dinner and refreshments for all the alumni in attendance.  Mona’s Catering Service provided the meal this year. Hellcats enjoyed pulled pork burgers, pasta, potato salad, slaw, and a delicious strawberry cobbler created by Pauline Childers. Hellcats ate this scrumptious meal at beautifully decorated tables, while clustered together with friends and classmates who enjoyed food and conversations of glory days. The hum of voices, chatter, and laughter brought about a relaxed atmosphere to the center.

Hellcats who attend our reunion each year look forward to class and club recognition. This year, the 1949, 1959 and 1969 classes were recognized, veterans honored, ballplayers and cheerleaders posed for pictures and Hellcat teachers were praised for their educational ability. Also, each person passing through the entrance received a gift and a ticket for door prizes.

After a fun-filled extravaganza, the curtain must close. As Hellcats exit, say their goodbyes, there are hopes and wishes that next year they will return for the 46th Annual Hellcat Reunion/Banquet.

The Hellier High School Alumni Association would like to extend our appreciation to all the organizations and individuals that donated to assist us with the 45th Reunion/ Banquet.
