Thousands celebrate Christmas at Massey's Extravaganza

EXPRESS STAFF REPORT

The Christmas spirit was out in full force during the third annual Massey Energy's Christmas Extravaganza, held Saturday at the former Magic Mart building in Toler and attended by several thousand children.

Each year, members of the Massey Energy Spousal Group donate more than $200,000 worth of new toys for many underprivileged children in Pike County and Mingo County, W.Va.

According to Jimetta McCoy, executive assistant to Massey Energy, about 7,000 children between the ages of birth and 18 years were given two gifts from the walls of unwrapped toys Saturday. Also, each family received a bag of fruit and a turkey to help make their spirits bright.

Families that attend are by invitation only, and invitations are sent out through the local school systems and serve any child who receives free or reduced lunch. Don Blankenship, President of Massey Energy, said, “It makes me feel real good to be able to do something to support the community. I wish the tremendous need for it wasn't there, but it is.” McCoy added, “This event would not be possible if it weren't for the numerous sponsors and Massey employees who donate their money, time and energy.”
